On January 30, 2026, in commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. Henry David Thoreau Elementary School hosted their “7th Annual Read In.” The theme for this year was: “Mission Possible II: Building Community, Uniting a Nation, the Nonviolent Way”.

This year’s celebration included special guest readers from Delta Sigma Theta Inc. Student Council Ambassadors escorted the ladies to classes. The school library had many reading selections appropriate for this event. The Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. guests read material by or about Dr. King relating to his message of peace. They also shared their experience of their profession with some of the Thoreau classes and how reading has made a difference in their life. The classroom visit took about 30 minutes per class.

Delta Sigma Theta Inc. members who participated included – Spectrum News Morning Anchor Sachell Reed; Retired Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) Principal Deborah Thompson; retired MPS School Principal Phyllis Spence; retired Teacher Lenoro Brown; Hollywood Entertainment-Executive Producer Symone Marshall; – Henry David Thoreau School Participants included Social Worker Marvalene Flinn; Parent Coordinator Lisa Turner; Principal Paula Jackson; Asst. Principal Angela Cureton; and Student Council Participants from the 6th, 7th, & 8th Grades.

Henry David Thoreau School provides a structured, yet nurturing environment that fosters the social, emotional, and academic growth necessary to encourage lifelong learning. Every effort is made to involve our community as partners in meeting the educational needs of their students and to share the dream of Dr. King.
