
On February 25, 2025 Henry David Thoreau School celebrated its “6th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Read-In” to commemorate Dr. King’s birthday. The theme for this year was: “What Are You Doing Others?” Henry David Thoreau School provides a structured, yet nurturing environment that fosters the social, emotional, and academic growth necessary to encourage lifelong learning. Every effort is made to involve the community as partners in meeting the educational needs of the children and to share the dream of Dr. King.

In this year’s celebration, the special guests reading material by or about Dr. King relating to his message of peace and/or shared their profession with one of the Thoreau classes. The school library has many reading selections appropriate for this event, or the students could bring their favorite book. Students also shared an experience of how reading has made a difference in their life.

This year’s Read-In participants (top photo) included Jesse Anderson, Kim Robinson, Preddie Gathiy, Arianna Avery, Leanadda Yancey, I’Lanna Williams, Victor Blackwell, Amir Thames, Charles Bauernfeind, Alvin Connor, Lenora Brown, Albert Brown, Sachelle Reed, and Vivian King. This year’s school ambassadors were Amir Thames, Victor Blackwell, Leanadda Yancey, and Arianna Avery.
