On Wednesday September 11, 2024, Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) honored the 423 first responders who were victims of the attacks on September 11, 2001 in a ceremony titled “MATC Remembers – A Salute to First Responders.”
The solemn commemorative event recognized the 72 police officers, 343 firefighters and eight Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and paramedics who died resulting from the attacks at U.S. buildings 23 years ago today. Yard signs with the names of all 423 deceased first responders were placed at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) Oak Creek Campus.
MATC students, faculty, community members and Milwaukee County Sheriff Denita R. Ball attended the event which included the Presentation of Colors by the Oak Creek Fire Department Honor Guard, singing of the National Anthem, and the invocation by Andrew Calhoun III, Ed.D., Lt. Commander, U.S. Navy Veteran, Chaplain. The Milwaukee Pipes and Drums played “Amazing Grace” as a musical tribute followed by the emotional tribute video, “What Is A Hero…A 9/11 Tribute.” The “Missing Man” table represented individuals who did not come home, but are here with us in spirit.
