On Saturday, August 10, 2024, The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) hosted its “40th Annual Walk for Education” at Veteran’s Park, 1010 N. Lincoln Memorial Dr. The “Walk for Education” helps UNCF raise funds to support black students in their education endeavors.
This year’s Grand Marshal for the walk was Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson. “UNCF and the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) provide opportunity for thousands of young people, offering connections to a lifetime of success. Graduates are making a difference in Milwaukee, elevating our city and adding valuable perspective to government, businesses, and not-for-profits here,” Mayor Johnson said. “The money raised will help support students, creating a stronger future for them and for communities across the country.”
This year’s run was supported by lead corporate donors Aldi, Ascension, and Northwestern Mutual, the event raises needed funds to support scholarships for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country. Other local sponsors include Froedtert, SC Johnson, Versiti, and We Energies.
This year marks UNGF’s 80th anniversary. “The theme is ‘Honoring the Legacy, Transforming our Future’,” said UNCF President and CEO Dr. Michael L. Lomax. “We will acknowledge and celebrate our founders, donors, and philanthropic partners over the last eight decades. And we will be encouraging and transforming the next generation through education to achieve greater successes for our community and this nation. UNCF and HBCUs matter now more than ever as our students and institutions need ongoing support.”
