On Sunday, January 12, 2025, MLK Scholarships Milwaukee held its 49th annual scholarship award service at Hephatha Lutheran Church, 1720 W. Locust St. This year’s essay theme was “You can kill the dreamer but you can’t kill the dream.” Congregation members, families and friends from 7 churches and 15 student candidates attended the award service and heard the winning essays. Cameron Harmon of UW-Milwaukee and Nhailee Nunez of Mt. Mary University won the top two essays prizes and received $3,000 each.

In addition to the essay winners sharing their writings, young adults participated in liturgical dance and testimonials about the scholarship’s value. Recognition was also given to the churches who raised the most money and had the most participants in the annual “All-a-thon” event, as well as a student that raised the most money for the scholarship efforts. All the awardees who were recognized received an award from $1,000 to $2,500. Closing remarks for the event were given by Civic Media’s Earl Ingram Show host Earl Ingram.
