On Saturday, May 19, 2018, as part of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Milwaukee, the celebration of the Open Housing Marches of 1967-68, the city of Milwaukee presented special awards to two of the participants who helped drive the movement at a awards ceremony held at North Division High School. The two recipients were veteran marcher and former NAACP commando Fred Reed and “mother of the movement” Inez Miller Herzer. Pictured at the event are (from left) Common Council President Ashanti Hamilton; Fred Reed; Inez Miller Herzer; congresswoman Gwen Moore; and Mayor Tom Barrett, along with event attendees.
