Alderman Lamont Westmoreland said he was outraged by response he got when calling 911 for help
A Milwaukee alderman said he is outraged and is demanding answers after the response he received when he called 911 for help.
During the special meeting Monday, July 29, 2024, the Common Council heard the 911 call from 4th District Alderman Lamont Westmoreland played after he was sideswiped.
“I’m giving them a F. I’m giving her (the dispatcher) an F, and you hear all the excuses. I mean, but once we had, once we dug deeper into the conversation, you heard, well, she should have done this,” Westmoreland said.
Many questions arose during Monday’s special meeting – for example, how long was the 911 operator on the job, and were there changes implemented after the phone call with Westmoreland?
The alderman is angry he wasn’t given more options for reporting the crime.
“I think they’re going to look at ensuring the call takers act appropriately when they’re ending the calls to make sure that there’s no more information that needs to be taken. They’ll look at giving appropriate options and responses,” said Leon Todd with the Fire and Police Commission.
Westmoreland said residents depend on this vital service.
“This isn’t about getting people in trouble. It’s about getting people the help that they need when they’re requesting it,” Westmoreland said.
There will be a follow-up meeting in September.
