The 2nd Annual Melanin Minded, Her Life and Music Event-“Memories”, was held on Friday November 10, 2023 at Direct Supply’s Champions’ Hall, 7301 W. Champions’ Way. This event was created by Dr. Bashir Raheem Easter to honor his mother, Deloris Pitts, who was diagnosed with dementia in 2004 and was cared for by family at home while the disease advance and eventually claimed her life. Dr. Easter and his family struggled in finding support and resources to care for his mother. Music was a tool the family utilized to help his mother with challenges encountered during the progression of the disease.
This year’s “Her Life and Music” event continued to share Dr. Easter’s passion to ensure that other caregivers don’t have the same struggles his family had. He introduced the Dementia Capable Milwaukee County project which includes Mitchell Airport becoming dementia capable. Melanin Minded honored caregivers and those who had passed away who used Melanin Minded services. Scholarships were presented to two youth caregivers who completed the Bridge Youth Program, Genesis Friedl and Savion Jarvis, . The Bridge Youth Program provides education to youth who are caregiving for a loved one diagnosed with a type of dementia. The program provides them a safe space to discuss the impact caregiving has had on them.
