On November 8, 2024, Melanin Minded, LLC., hosted its 3rd annual gala at Direct Supply, honoring the memory of Deloris Pitts and celebrating community resilience in caregiving. The gala recognized several honorees including Thelma Lock, Jonette Arms and Ramona Dicks-Williams; and the Milwaukee County Department of Health and Human Services. Selwyn Jarvis and Ann Marie Wooden were honored with the Caregiver Award for their dedication to their late mother, while Patti Purtell, and Janice Dicks received the Navigator Transportation Rider Award; and Eric Snowden was recognized with the Men’s Health Award for his driving services.
Also at the event, the Bridge Youth’s Invisible Caregivers program awarded scholarships to Anya Thomas and Jazzmine Smith, emphasizing support for youth caregivers. Melanin Minded LLC founder Dr. Bashir Easter announced the Dementia Villages Project, set to launch in 2025, aimed at creating supportive environments for individuals with dementia. State Senator Laytonya Johnson presented Melanin Minded with a Citation of Commendation from the State of Wisconsin, acknowledging the organization’s efforts in enhancing community support for those affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD).
