On Sunday, May 17, 2015 local community historian Irene Bishop Goggans received the honorary degree, Doctor of Community History, from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Education. Dr. Goggans has distinguished herself as a significant scholarly contributor on the subject of African American community history, particularly that of Milwaukee. Dr. Goggans has chronicled the events, people and places of note in Black Milwaukee since coming to the city in the 1940s as a teenager from her hometown of Dyersburg, TN. She has served as a consultant to numerous media and community programs on African American community history; and was recognized in 2012 as a “Social Justice Icon” Special Honoree by the Milwaukee Times Black Excellence Awards. The newly christened Dr. Goggans is flanked by UWM Chancellor Dr. Mark Mone (left) and School of Education Dean Dr. Alan Shoho at the commencement ceremony.

Congratulations Dr. Goggans!
