On Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital, 2301 North Lake Dr., Ascension Healthcare and Columbia St. Mary’s hosted the launch of their new heart health initiative, “Be of Good Heart.” The program goal is to reach 2,000 African Americans to improve heart health and empower our community to be heart smart.
The luncheon included a powerful speech by Johnson Controls Foundation President Grady L. Crosby about his personal experience as a heart patient. He was followed by Ebenezar Health Resource Center Coordinator and Parish Nurse Julia Means, BSN, who said, “The power is within us to get healthy. Our power is our community with people for themselves and their families.” Each year about 23.8 percent of African Americans die of heart disease.
