On June 15, 2024, City at Peace in the Arts Productions (CAPITA) hosted its first annual “We are the Drum Awards and Scholarship Brunch” at the Four Points Sheraton in Brown Deer, WI.
“We are the Drum Awards” were presented to six community leaders who work diligently at improving the lives of others in the metropolitan Milwaukee. Established in 2022, The “We are the Drum Award” was created to honor worthy individuals and organizations who are doing exceptional work in researching, preserving, and uplifting African American History and offering programming to enrich the lives of African Americans in our city and state.
The honorees for this year’s awards are: Programming and Youth Engagement Award – Victor and Dawn Barnett of The Running Rebels; Exceptional Leadership in Community Restoration Award – Alderwoman Milele Coggs; Exceptional Community Empowerment in Business Education and Personal Development Award – Milwaukee Urban League CEO Dr. Eve M. Hall; the Enduring Community Leadership/ Enduring Community Award – Ralph Hollmon; Community Engagement/Leadership to Enrich Lives and Experiences of Youth Award – Earl Ingram and Voices of the Elders; and Transformative Community Engagement and Mentorship Award – Andre Lee Ellis and The CAGE Milwaukee. The 2024 Arlene Skwierawski Scholarship recipients (pictured in photo) are Wisconsin Lutheran High School graduate Ny’ree Bailey; Rufus King IB High School graduate Camorra Forrest; and the Milwaukee Academy of Science graduate Anthony Meyers.
