It’s simplistic to think that “just say no” is the best way to avoid developing a problem with alcohol and other drugs. It didn’t work back in the 1980s, and it isn’t going to work now. Instead, a better approach is for each person to make informed decisions about whether they will use substances, how much they will use, and why.
That’s why the RISE Drug Free MKE coalition has developed a multimedia campaign to help teens and adults set clear boundaries around their substance use. And we’ve recruited a fantastic player with the Marquette University men’s basketball team— David Joplin —to help us get the word out.
Why you don’t need to take every shot that’s given to you
In a video to be played at the team’s home games, Joplin explains how he is able to focus on academics, his basketball career, and his future aspirations because he draws very clear boundaries around substance use. “Sometimes winning means not taking every shot I’m given,” he said.
So how can you follow his example?
If you’re under 21, it’s illegal for you to drink alcohol or take any substances, except for medication specifically for a health condition. And legal issues may prevent you from getting a scholarship or a job, which will get in the way of you reaching your dreams. Want another reason? Drinking alcohol or taking other drugs when you’re young will harm your brain development, concentration, and critical thinking skills.
If you’re 21 and over, you can legally drink alcohol, but you may want to think about why you’re drinking; if drinking is creating problems for you at work, school, legally, or in your relationships; and if you are in control of your drinking, or if it controls you.
In addition, you may want to ask yourself some more questions. Do you feel better or worse the next day? Do you need to take more and more to get the results you want? Are your friends concerned about you? If you don’t like the answers to these questions, you may want to take steps to setting new boundaries around your substance use.
More resources for setting boundaries
The RISE Drug Free MKE coalition’s website (risedrugfreemke.org) includes information and resources on how to set clear boundaries around alcohol, marijuana, commercial tobacco, vaping, and medication misuse. The coalition encourages youth and adults to get involved in activities that don’t involve substances; to surround yourself with friends who support your boundaries; and to see boundaries as a way to help you to achieve your dreams.
