Debunking common misconceptions about alcohol and other drugs
Each year, partners across Milwaukee County join forces for Light and Unite Red Week to promote community- wide substance abuse prevention education. The week is in alignment with National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, an annual observance to inspire dialogue about the science of drug use and addiction among youth. It allows for students, educators, healthcare providers, and community partners to help address alcohol and other drug use in communities nationwide.
This year’s theme is ‘Mythbusters’
Curiosity about substance use is normal. You see it on television and hear about it in music, but it’s important that you’re getting the information from reliable sources. Many people still believe that marijuana isn’t addictive, but that’s a myth! The fact is, according to Yale Medicine, that about 10 percent of people who begin smoking cannabis will become addicted, and 30 percent of current users meet the criteria for addiction. For someone to be considered addicted, they must meet two of 11 criteria, which include an inability to reduce consumption, contact cravings, and relationship and social problems.
It’s also a common myth that prescription medication is always safe if it’s prescribed by your doctor. The fact is that just because prescription medication can be helpful, doesn’t make it automatically safe. Medications have side effects and can be addictive. Misuse still happens with a prescription, so it’s important to follow dosage instructions carefully, never share your medication, and ask your doctor about side effects and drug interactions.
Show your support
If you want to show your support for promoting a healthy, substance-free Milwaukee, wear red on Monday, March 17. Our partners throughout the county are lighting up their buildings red as well, in honor of the first day of Light and Unite Red Week 2025. Throughout the week, RISE Drug Free MKE, community organizations, and other allies will be debunking common myths about alcohol and other drug use through social media and in-person events.
