Despite the weather, Milwaukee celebrates Juneteenth Day

June 21, 2018

Photos by Yvonne Kemp

On Tuesday, June 19, 2018, Milwaukee celebrated its 47th Annual Juneteenth Day on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. Despite a rainy and overcast day, thousands turned out to take part in the festivities which included a parade, vendors, music, food, and live performances. The Milwaukee celebration is put on by Northcott Neighborhood House, Inc., and is the oldest known Juneteenth celebration in the country recognizing the ending of slavery in the United States. Pictured at the event are (left photo) 6th District Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs with her daughter, who was crowned Little Miss Juneteenth Queen; (right photo) Northcott Neighborhood House, Inc. Executive Director Mac Weddle; State Senator Lena Taylor, and community activist Student Minister William Muhammad.
