On Tuesday, August 7, 2018, the City of Milwaukee along with the Bader Foundation and Alderwoman Milele Coggs held a special street renaming ceremony at North 4th Street and West North Avenue to honor the late civil rights advocate Vel Phillips. The intersection will now be known as North Vel R. Phillips Ave. The renaming celebration was part of the “6th Annual Bronzeville Week,” which was dedicated to celebration of the art and culture of the African American community in Milwaukee’s historic neighborhood. “The street’s renaming serves as a memorial to Vel Phillips’ advocacy for social justice, fair housing and civil rights,” said Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs. Pictured at the event are (from left) Rep. David Bowen with Vel Phillips’ son, Michael Phillips.
