James Beckum, who founded the Beckum-Stapleton Little League in 1964, has passed away on Monday, November 11, 2024, at age 95.
Beckum played in the Negro Leagues for the St. Louis Stars in the 1950s. He later became a mentor to thousands of kids, founding the Beckum-Stapleton Little League in Milwaukee’s Carver Park on N. 9th and W. Brown Streets in 1964. He gave children of color the opportunity to learn and play America’s national pastime. At a time when they wouldn’t have been allowed to.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of James Beckum, who left us peacefully this morning in his home. James was a source of love, wisdom, and strength, and his memory will forever live in our hearts. He dedicated his life to the Beckum Stapleton Little League, touching the lives of everyone who was a part of it in countless ways. During this difficult time, our family appreciates your thoughts, prayers, and support as we mourn the loss and celebrate the remarkable life of Beckum.
Thank you for honoring his memory with us. The home going celebration for James Beckum will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2024. The services will be held at Greater Galilee Baptist Church 2432 N. Teutonia Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53206. Viewing will be from 10 -11 a.m., and service will follow promptly after at 11 a.m.”
