On Friday, February 24, 2023, The Black Excellence/Louvenia Johnson Scholarship Foundation (BLE/LJSF) hosted the 38th Annual Black Excellence Awards at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 333 W. Kilbourn Ave. Founded in 1986 by Milwaukee Times co-founders the late Nathan Conyers, the late Louvenia Johnson and the late Luther Golden, the event held each February for Black History Month, honors local individuals who are outstanding in their field. This year’s honorees (top photo) included Elizabeth Coggs, Tanisha Collins-Johnson, John Daniels, III, Olivia El-Amin, Larry Willis, Tiffany Miller, Lilo Allen, Kermiath McClendon, Anita Johnson, Ronald Adams, Carole McKinney-Rice, Cynthia Wilson, Angilique Jones-Cornelius, Brenda Cullin, Karen Graham, Matthew Ellis, Dr. Pamela D. Wilson, Michele Le Bourgeois, Everett Marshburn, Tarik Moody, Colonel Carl Meredith, Craig Ellis, Ruby J. Dent, Byron Jones, Larrissa Lampkins-Cobb, Bishop Monica Parchia Price, Reverend Brandle Morrow, Dalvery Blackwell, Mildred Coby, Valerie Allen, Don Bennett, Mary T. Meredith-Bullock, and Jacqueline Smith.
As part of the Black Excellence Awards the (BLE/LJSF) also awarded 12 outstanding students the 2023 Louvenia Johnson Scholarship. Each student received $2,000 and a brand new laptop computer which was provided by the Greater Milwaukee Urban League. All of this year’s recipients were (bottom photo) Jennifer Adongo, Amaya Bauldwin, Fayth Buchanan Cooper, Michelle Drane, Nasier Gray, Savion Jarvis, Philip Johnson, Adaobi Nnamuchi, Simone Prosper, Hailey Schock, Jacoby Stewart, and Alexandria Woods.
