Join RISE Drug Free MKE and Community Advocates Public Policy Institute on Saturday, May 18, for a free community event highlighting Mental Health Awareness.
The Discover Wellness Walk is a family-friendly event that will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in Cathedral Square Park. It will include seven stations where community partners will share free resources, a small activity, and dialogue around healthy, evidence-based coping skills. A mindful movement class will also be taught at 11 a.m. on the park lawn. The Discover Wellness Walk aims to connect the community in conversations about mental health, accessible forms of self-care, and coping skills, in addition to connecting folks to local resources related to mental wellness and behavioral health.
The event was inspired by a need to continue to have open and stigma-free conversations, and was organized by the RISE Drug Free MKE mental health action team, which includes members affiliated with Froedert Health, Wauwatosa Fire Department, The Parenting Network, and Chronically Resilient.
“As Milwaukee residents ourselves, we have noticed that there is a lot of healing in being in community with one another and talking about the struggles of stress, anxiety, and depression, amongst other mental health challenges, but more importantly, sharing stories and resources about what helps overcome these challenges,” said Cecilia Tenorio, one of the event organizers.
“Too many conversations around mental health are happening behind closed doors, in whispered voices or not at all, and we want to lend our voices to open, positive conversations in more public spaces around the city.”
