Dr. MLK, Jr., Community Center Hosts 50th Anniversary Celebration

On Saturday, June 6, 2026 the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Center hosted its 50th anniversary celebration. The community center opened in 1976 in King Park, 1531 W. Vliet St., on Milwaukee’s near West Side and since then it has been a vital part of the neighborhood providing both space for the community as well as much needed outreach programs.
The celebration featured remarks from Milwaukee County leaders, tours of the center, live music, food, local vendors and activities for children. The highlight of the event was the unveiling and ribbon-cutting of a new mural commemorating the center’s 50 years of service to the community.
Director Dee McCollum describes the center as a safe and welcoming space for the community. “In the walls of this King Center is a safe haven and that is modeled off of what Dr. King preached,” McCollum said.
