School starts September 6; MPS offers back-to-school tips

September 8, 2022

Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) wants to help students get the new school year off to a great start! Families can take important steps to help get students ready for a successful year.

Sleep is important! Over the long weekend, help children practice getting to bed on time. Wake up children a little earlier each day to prepare for getting up for school.

Develop routines like choosing clothing and organizing supplies the night before. Saving even a few minutes in the morning can help children have a better start.

Set attendance goals. Successful students are in class on time every day. Talk with children about what helps them feel confident and succeed.

Important reminders:

• MPS schools on the traditional calendar (most elementary schools) began school Tuesday, September 6, 2022.

• MPS schools on the early start calendar (all high schools, all 6th–8th grade middle schools, all K–12 schools, and seven of our elementary schools) went back to school on Monday, August 15, 2022.

To check which calendar is used by your child’s school, visit our School Calendars webpage at https://mps.milwaukee.k12.wi.us/en/Families/Resources/School-Calendars.htm.

To help you locate essential information, our home page on the MPS website at https://mps.milwaukee.k12.wi.us/ has been updated. Look for new buttons to access details about enrollment, school supply lists, COVID-19 updates and mask policy, academic programs, and transportation.

A new school year means new school supplies! Find the supply list for your child’s grade level (K3–8) on our Supply Lists webpage at https://mps.milwaukee.k12.wi.us/en/Families/Resources/Supply-Lists.htm. High school students will receive information regarding classroom supplies from their instructors.

COVID-19 is still a concern across the country. MPS is currently following a masks optional policy. Masks will be required to be worn by students and staff only when COVID-19 levels in Milwaukee County are rated in the High category by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC updates its data every Thursday. Using this data, MPS will make determinations every Thursday, with mask requirements being revised for the following school day and subsequent week. The district mask status will be available on the MPS COVID-19 Updates webpage at https://mps.milwaukee.k12.wi.us/en/District/Newsrooms/COVID-19-Updates.htm.

MPS is proud to offer free breakfast and lunch to every student in the district on school days. For more information, visit the MPS Nutrition Services webpage at https://mps.milwaukee.k12.wi.us/en/Families/Family-Services/School-Nutrition.htm.

We know that families will have questions—please contact your child’s teacher, principal, or school office any time assistance is needed.

We’re looking forward to a great school year!
