Students from North Division High School boarded buses and traveled to Indianapolis this month to attend the annual Circle City Classic. Majorettes and drumline members performed dance moves and percussion cadences for more than 100,000 spectators along the one-mile parade route through downtown Indianapolis. North Division was the only group from Wisconsin to participate in the event.
While in Indiana, students also attended the Circle City Classic football game between Howard and Bethune-Cookman University and witnessed the battle of the bands between the two schools at halftime.
The group will participate in numerous parades and events throughout the year, including the Racine Holiday Parade, the Beloit Grand Lighted Parade, the Fond du Lac Christmas Parade, the MPS Drumline Competition, the Milwaukee Wave Dance Competition, East Troy Holiday Dance Competition, Green Bay Titletown Dance Competition, Milwaukee St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the Milwaukee Juneteenth Day Parade, the Kenosha Civics Veteran’s Parade, the West Allis Independence Day Parade, the Menomonee Falls Independence Day parade, a performance with the Racine Concert band at the Racine Zoo, the Racine 4th of July Parade, and the South Milwaukee Heritage Days Parade.
The mission of North Division’s music program is to provide opportunities and expose students to areas outside of Milwaukee, engage students in community performances, educate students in music theory and appreciation, and create a safe and engaging learning environment in disciplinary and interdisciplinary literacy. Students are expected to attend academic classes and complete classroom assignments to the best of their ability. Students work on creating goals for their future and are provided opportunities and consultation on how to reach their goals. North Division’s drumline and majorettes are under the direction of Principal Keith Carrington, Gina Phillips-Jensen, Paul Braun, Andre Torrence, and Patrick McGee.
Milwaukee Public Schools offers a wide array of vocal and instrumental music programs that not only teach performing skills and confidence but provide unforgettable travel and performing experiences.
North Division is one of the newest schools to join the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership. To welcome them to the partnership, United Way was proud to help sponsor students to participate in the City Circle Classic.
