MPS students will explore Historically Black Colleges and Universities
College and career planning is part of every student’s education journey in Milwaukee Public Schools. From October 11-15, 2021, schools will highlight Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Students in K5 through grade 12 can expect a variety of activities throughout the week and should plan to take part in some events after school hours.
Following is a sampling of activities that students can take part in as they make plans for college and career training.
All Week: Staff are encouraged to wear HBCU and fraternity/ sorority paraphernalia.
Tuesday: Learn why HBCUs matter from Wisconsin State Representative LaKeshia Myers at 6:00 P.M. via Zoom (download a flyer or go to https://tinyurl.com/MPSHBCU.
Students are encouraged to take a virtual HBCU tour and visit the MPS HBCU webpage.
Wednesday: Graduating seniors should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and find out what financial aid they qualify for.
Thursday: Learn about scholarships, internships, and other financial resources by visiting the United Negro College Fund and the Thurgood Marshall Fund websites.
Students can learn about new opportunities by visiting the website of African- American Greek Letter Organizations (fraternities/ sororities) that support scholastic achievement and equity.
