MPS students mark the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

January 24, 2019

In honor of the messages of peace, hope, and unity left by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., students in MPS will spend time this week learning about and acting upon his legacy. Events are planned across the district in honor of King’s birthday.

On January 20, hundreds of students and their families attended or took part in Milwaukee’s Birthday Celebration honoring King. Milwaukee is one of only two cities in the United States that have celebrated the holiday annually since 1984.

In the coming days, students will watch videos, write messages, create artwork, deliver speeches, stage performances, and design other creative ways to honor King. An important aspect of the activities is not to merely observe the holiday, but to take action to effect change, in the spirit of the way King lived his life.

Themes of equality and progress will continue in February during Black History Month and the National Black Lives Matter Week of Action taking place February 4 – 8, 2019. Watch for exciting updates of student activities, and look for a schedule of public events for Black Lives Matter week at mpsmke.com/blm.
