Milwaukee Recreation cut the ribbon for the renovated Burnham Playfield (1755 S. 32nd St.) last summer. The renovation to the east portion of Burnham Playfield included the removal of asphalt paving; the planting of shade trees; and the installation of a new synthetic turf soccer field, walking paths, a new playground, and basketball courts. The wading pool at the playfield was also converted into a user-operated splash pad. New and upgraded site amenities have also been added, including improved lighting, benches, and trash receptacles. Fieldhouse updates featured new windows, doors, and accessible restroom facilities.
Several partners, including VIA Community Development Corporation, the Land & Water Conservation Fund, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, and Zilber Family Foundation, provided incredible support throughout the project.
The MANDIs, sponsored by U.S. Bank in partnership with LISC Milwaukee, recognize excellence in community development. Finalists and winners are selected by an independent, cross-sector volunteer selection committee. The committee reviews nominations and selects two finalists in each of seven categories. Milwaukee Recreation’s Burnham Playfield renovation is a finalist for the Brewers Community Foundation Public Space Award.
In 2021, Milwaukee Recreation also received two MANDI awards for its Arts Internship Program, including the Chase Economic Development Award and the Wells Fargo People’s Choice Award.
