Author Jacqueline Woodson inspires MPS students

October 3, 2019

Reading from her newest book Red at the Bone, Jacqueline Woodson captivated students at Washington High School on September 23, 2019. The winner of numerous awards for her writing, including Newbery Honors in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2015, Woodson talked about her writing career, her inspirations and her challenges, and answered questions from students.

Accompanying Woodson were DJ Kima Hamilton and spoken-word artist and author Dasha Kelly Hamilton. They engaged in a lively conversation and entertained students with music and performances selected especially for the students.

In addition to Washington students, teens from Milwaukee Marshall and Bradley Tech attended the event to hear insights from the world of an author and get a better understanding of careers in writing and creative arts. Woodson concluded the event by signing books for everyone in attendance.

MPS wishes to thank Jacqueline Woodson, Kima Hamilton, and Dasha Kelly Hamilton for spending time with and inspiring our students!
