Position Open: Voting Outreach Advocacy Specialist at Disability Rights Wisconsin

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
VOTING OUTREACH ADVOCACY SPECIALIST-.5 FTE/LTE
Office Location: Milwaukee
$18.25-21.65/hour

Disability Rights Wisconsin is the designated, federally funded protection and advocacy agency for persons with disabilities in Wisconsin. DRW utilizes a variety of individual and systems advocacy approaches to protect people’s rights, including legal and administrative remedies, legislative and policy change, and training.

The Voting Outreach Advocacy Specialist will work with DRW and our disability partners on the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) efforts on voting rights for people with disabilities in Wisconsin. This position will provide outreach and education to people with disabilities, their families and other stakeholders on voting rights.

Please note, workload will vary throughout the year, being heaviest surrounding the election in November. Maximum hours for twelve months are 1039.

Responsibilities:
1. Identifies, develops, and attends outreach events to promote DRW’s mission, priorities and interests.
2. Provides community education to a variety of groups on voting rights issues for persons with disabilities.
3. Reaches out to nonpartisan voting rights organizations and to the disability community to coordinate voting rights activities.
4. Develops training and resource materials on voting rights including assisting with social media.
5. Partners with disability and other organizations, including the Wisconsin Disability Vote Coalition, regarding voting rights issues, including accessibility.
6. Monitors and reports on accessibility of polling places.
7. Responds to individual requests regarding voting rights issues.
8. Interacts with clerks and state election officials to identify and correct voting access issues.
9. Communicates with DRW staff to exchange information and provide technical assistance and consultation.
10. Maintains a working knowledge of state and federal voting and election law, government systems, and policies related to the voting rights of individuals with disabilities.
11. Represents DRW on coalitions and committees that address voting issues, including the legal and civil rights of people with disabilities.
12. Assists with special projects as directed.

Qualifications:

1. Experience with community outreach and organizing and/or bachelor’s degree in related area.
2. Demonstrated commitment to social justice and/or disability rights.
3. Excellent communication skills; oral, written and through social media platforms.
4. Experience providing training, outreach and developing communication materials.
5. Substantial travel throughout Wisconsin Required (must have valid driver’s license and vehicle).
6. Ability to work a flexible schedule with some weekend and evening hours.

Preferred:

Working knowledge of voting laws and rights in Wisconsin.
Ability to work well independently and in teams.
Professional or personal experience with people with disabilities.
Knowledge of the disability service system and disability advocacy issues.
Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
