James Thimpson Erby was born to the union of Helen and Frank Erby on June 27, 1940 in West Helena, Arkansas. The family migrated to Chicago, Illinois. Like many families in that era, Frank and Helen came to Chicago to access the opportunities that were burgeoning on the Westside where James attended David G. Farragut High School.
