True Heroes: Honoring our essential workers

April 1, 2021

Staff Photo

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, our society has continued on, thanks to a dedicated essential front-line work force. The people who we interact with everyday, who help keep our lives going, have unselfishly risked their health and safety on a daily basis. Some of those workers include food store workers, such as those at Galst Food Mart at N. Teutonia Ave. and Capitol Dr. ( top photo), where store manager (from left) Tyrone and the meat department staff – Alfonso, Bernardo, Clayton, and Balente – who have kept meat on their customers’ tables during the pandemic; the staff at Hayat Carter Herbal Shoppe (1st photo below), 2400 W Burleigh St., where Dr. Lester Carter, Jr. (center), along with Charles (left) and Monty (right), make sure their customers have continued to have their prescriptions filled by offering curb-side pick-up; Cecilia Nation-Gardner (2nd photo below), a Milwaukee County Transit driver and former Black Excellence honoree, who helped save a young girl walking along Route 15 in Cudahy in 2019, has continued to help vital workers get to their jobs; and the staff of Milwaukee Health Services, Inc. (bottom photo), who have not only continued to serve the public with their health needs, they have also set ups COVID-19 testing and vaccination sites. For this Easter weekend, we ask that if you see a front-line worker, please thank them for all their hard work and dedication.
