On Saturday, September 6, 2025, the Milwaukee Public Library celebrated the grand opening of its new Martin Luther King Branch. Located in the city's Harambee neighborhood, the 17,400-square-foot facility greeted city leaders, neighbors, and families with enthusiasm as they cut the ribbon and explored the state-of-the-art space that promises to be a beacon of knowledge and technology. The new space offers plenty for users young and old to flex their creativity. including a fully equipped maker-space with 3D printing, podcasting equipment, and the latest technology, a large community room designed for public meetings and events, dedicated children’s and teen areas, and computer stations, private study spaces, and meeting rooms. The library, now based at 2901 N. MLK Jr. Dr, is not only a testament to the enduring value of public spaces dedicated to learning but also stands as a symbol of the city's innovative spirit and commitment to environmental sustainability. At the opening, Mayor Cavalier Johnson described the library as a “symbol of innovation”, while City Librarian Joan Johnson proudly shared its achievement as the region’s greenest library, complete with solar panels, geothermal heating and cooling, and a green roof. The new library underscores a unified commitment to the intellectual and creative prosperity of Milwaukee's residents.
