Milwaukee County Transit System announced changes, citing security measures around the event.
Riders are advised to expect delays and plan their trips accordingly.
Fourteen bus routes will be impacted starting July 11, 2024, as the Republican National Convention (RNC) comes to Milwaukee.
According to a news release Monday, July 8, 2024 Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) reported security measures downtown are forcing buses to detour starting Thursday, July 11 and lasting through the duration of the RNC which ends July 19.
Officials said riders should also expect delays across the system.
MCTS said it will serve only the existing bus stops located outside the downtown vehicle screening and pedestrian-restricted security perimeter.
Among the routes impacted, the RNC said it included CONNECT 1, BlueLine, GreenLine, 12, 15, 18, 19, 30, 31, 33, 34, 57, 80 and 81.
ParaTransit Transit Plus Van Service
Milwaukee County Transit System’s Transit Plus vans will be able to enter the Vehicle Screening Perimeter for scheduled drop-offs only. Paratransit riders should download the My Transit Manager app on their mobile phone to track their trip in real-time. Anyone visiting Milwaukee County for the RNC who is paratransit-eligible in their home community can request ADA visitor status by calling 414-343-1701 at least one day prior to arrival. Paratransit riders will be subject to the same security screenings as others, so plan for extra travel time when scheduling your ride.
Transit Plus vans will be allowed to pass through the RNC outer perimeter through dedicated checkpoints.
Please check back in the future when specific checkpoint locations are announced.
While at the checkpoint, the vans will be scanned and evaluated by security personnel.
The inner security perimeter border has not been released, but only people with pre-approved RNC credentials, including delegates, RNC staff/volunteers and media will be allowed to enter.
No vehicular traffic will be allowed into the “inner” perimeter.
If a credentialed rider wishes to enter the “inner” perimeter and requires assistance, they should plan to travel with a credentialed personal care assistant (PCA). The van driver will not be allowed to enter to help.
The final perimeter boundary and checkpoint locations are subject to change. Please see the map for more information.
