Focus on Health: Uniting to Heal Amid Overdose Loss

July 23, 2026

Empathy, love, support, and empowerment are essential as our community copes with the devastating impact of drug overdoses. The grieving process can be overwhelming, often leading to feelings of despair, anger, confusion, and loneliness. Those who lose loved ones may find it difficult to cope and may feel isolated in their pain. It is vital for us, as a community, to unite and acknowledge these emotions and offer each other the support we need. By encouraging open dialogue, sharing resources, and creating safe environments for healing, we can help individuals and families navigate their grief together. Together, we can foster hope and resilience in the face of overdose.

Milwaukee County is confronting an impactful issue with drug overdoses that touches lives across all demographics. In 2025, nearly 5,000 individuals required emergency assistance due to overdose incidents, and we lost almost 400 community members to fatal overdoses. As we move through 2026, these tragic numbers remain distressingly high, with over 1,800 people already needing help with nonfatal overdoses and at least 80 lives lost this year. These figures are not just statistics—they reflect the faces of our friends, neighbors, and family members. To make a meaningful impact, we must come together to understand this crisis better and take collective action to protect the health and safety of our community.

International Overdose Day Observed on August 31
On Monday, August 31, 2026, Milwaukee County will come together to observe the 25th anniversary of International Overdose Awareness Day, the tenth annual gathering in Milwaukee to support people impacted by overdose. The day will begin with a press conference at City Hall, where leaders will speak about the importance of acting and supporting those affected by overdose. In the evening, the RISE Drug Free MKE coalition, alongside community partners, will gather at Veterans Park and lead a Remembrance Walk to honor the loved ones we have lost. This all-ages event will include food, games, art, inspiring speakers, and a one-mile walk. To close out the day, we’ll light up the Hoan Bridge in purple—a symbol of hope and remembrance for everyone in our community who has been touched by overdose.

We invite everyone in our community to come together, stand in solidarity, and support one another on this important day. Let’s honor the lives lost, share our stories, and foster hope for a brighter future. Together, we can make a difference. 25 years on. You are still needed.
