On Friday, May 22, 2026 the Somali Resource Center of Milwaukee (SRC) hosted its “Community Halal Food Box Donation and Distribution,’ event at its Adult Day Center, 1020 W. Historic Mitchelle St. Halal is an Arabic term translating to “permissible” or “lawful.” In Islam, foods are broadly classified as either halal (permissible) or haram (forbidden). This event helped put together boxes of donated food for refugee families with items that were all permissible under Islamic law. This helps eliminate the chance of receiving food items from other food pantries that would be forbidden and unusable. This event was put on by SRC Executive director Lul Abukar; VP and interim Treasurer Zaxara Ali; Community Outreach Director Faria Raghe; Director of Marketing Fatima Aden and with assistance from the Hunger Task Force. The Somali Resource Center of Milwaukee is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the social, educational and economic well-being of immigrant and refugee families through culturally responsive programs, advocacy, and community support services.
