Tour Historic Central Library

Tour the Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., with the Friends. Free tours begin at 11 a.m. each Saturday

afternoon in the rotunda. Tour goers receive a coupon for a free book at the end of the tour in the Bookseller

Green Home Series: Climate Change with 350

Florentine Opera Company Sister Carrie Book Club

In anticipation of the world premiere of a new American opera, Sister Carrie, join the Florentine Opera

Company in an exploration of the groundbreaking Theodore Dreiser novel of the same name at Central Library,

814 W. Wisconsin Ave., Monday, September 19, 6-7 p.m. Sister Carrie follows Carrie Meeber, a young woman

from rural Wisconsin on the eve of the 20th century as she migrates to the big city and ultimately becomes a

Broadway star. Sessions include visits from Florentine Opera Company guests and exclusive previews from the

Legal and Financial Planning for Individuals with Health Concerns

The second session of this two-part program continues to help individuals affected by dementia, their care

partners and family members better understand the legal and financial issues that may have an impact on them.

Learn the importance of advanced planning, identify steps for getting legal, financial and future care plans in

place, be familiar with specific legal issues, future care options and financial issues pertaining to dementia at

MLK Fiber Arts Social

Bring your knitting, crocheting, beading, or other needlework project and join others at the Martin Luther King

monthly. While librarians cannot do a patent search for you, these monthly programs will demonstrate how to

get started by following the USPTO guidelines.

Meet the Author: Sara Goldrick-Rab

Meet Sara Goldrick-Rab, author of Paying the Price: College Costs, Financial Aid and the Betrayal of the

American Dream at Centennial Hall, 733 N. Eighth St., Thursday, September 22, 6:30-7:30 p.m. College is far

too expensive for many people today, and the confusing mix of federal, state, institutional, and private financial

aid leaves countless students without the resources they need to pay for it. Drawing on an unprecedented study

of 3,000 young adults who entered public colleges and universities in Wisconsin in 2008, Goldrick-Rab reveals

150 Years of H.G. Wells

Enjoy an afternoon of time travel, aliens, and other strange phenomena in celebration of the 150 th anniversary of

H.G. Wells’ birth at Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., Saturday, September 24, 2-4 p.m. in the Richard

E. and Lucile Krug Rare Books Room. Prof. Gerry Canavan, assistant professor of contemporary literature at

Marquette University, will speak on the impact of Wells’ early writings and his role in the invention of science

fiction. First editions, autographed works, and original manuscripts by H.G. Wells will be on display. The

program includes a special broadcast of Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds radio drama.

Ballet Folklorico

See a variety of regional Mexican folk dances and the professional art of trick roping at Central Library, 814 W.

Wisconsin Ave., Saturday, September 24, 3-4 p.m. in the Schoenleber Reading Room. Ballet Folklorico
