The Counseling Corner

“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
– Prov. 11:25
The focus this month is on the Salvation Army and the charitable work they do as part of its ministry. Founded in 1865 by William Booth, the Salvation Army continues to be involved in ministry efforts which includes prison visits, responding to disasters, providing homeless and domestic violence shelters, and thrift stores. Today, the Salvation Army is recognized as a global charitable organization that exists to help others. This week, this column will continue highlighting the Toy Shop sponsored by the Salvation Army in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program.

Beloved, there are so many ways we can give and there is always a need to be filled. Giving is not just for adults. We need to get young people involved in giving at an early age. Church youth groups can get involved in the blessing of giving to others by donating gently used items to local clothing banks; collecting and donating non-perishable foods to local food pantries; organizing a project to collect and hand out blankets, sandwiches and water bottles to the homeless who sleep on the street; visiting local assisted living facilities or nursing homes; or organizing a Children’s book drive to donate to children in the hospital. Encourage your young people to make a difference in someone’s life by giving! It only takes one small act of kindness to make someone’s day.
