Audition notice: ‘Black Nativity By Langston Hughes’

July 21, 2022

Black Arts MKE is seeking performers for its holiday musical production of Black Nativity By Langston Hughes – a testament to the timeless work of Langston Hughes, telling the story of the Nativity through a combination of scripture, poetry, dance and song from the African American perspective. Directed by Dimonte Henning, Black Nativity By Langston Hughes will be staged at the Marcus Performing Arts Center in Wilson Theater at Vogel Hall December 8-11, 2022. Experienced African American equity and non-equity adult singers, dancers and actors who sing and move, and can play multiple roles are encouraged to apply. There are also roles available for young performers, ages 8-17.

Black Nativity By Langston Hughes auditions will be held Monday, August 15, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Monday, August 22, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Marcus Performing Arts Center, Studio 4A on the fourth floor (123 East State Street – use entrance next to loading dock).

Please submit a head-shot or photo, artistic resume and date/time conflict sheet prior to audition to Info@Blackartsmke.org by August 12, 2022. Prepare a one-to-two-minute monologue and one gospel/musical theater song of your choice. A piano accompanist will be provided. Please note that an appointment is required to audition. Rehearsals for Black Nativity By Langston Hughes will begin early November, held evenings and weekends. Masks will be required indoors during auditions.

Please note that callbacks are tentatively scheduled to be held on Monday, August 29, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Black Nativity By Langston Hughes is also in need of production interns (stage management, costume, lighting, etc.), ages 16 and older. This is a paid opportunity. Please submit a cover letter and resume to Info@Blackartsmke.org to be considered.
