On Wednesday, February 18, 2026, the Milwaukee Chapter of The Links, Incorporated along with Mayor Cavalier Johnson and others, unveiled a Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) bus designed to promote kidney health across the city.
According to the National Kidney Foundation, Black Americans are three times as likely to develop kidney failure in comparison to white Americans. National Black K.A.R.E. is an initiative that spreads awareness about kidney disease, and that campaign is heading to Milwaukee.
Through participation in the initiative, the Milwaukee Chapter of The Links, Incorporated was granted national grant funding which will be used to educate residents on disease prevention and treatment — and part of that education effort will be on wheels with 7 buses circulating in the highly affected neighborhoods, promoting good kidney health through podcasts and presentations, and partnering with community organizations to spread the word. The overall goal is to reduce the risk of chronic kidney disease and kidney failure, to improve outcomes for people living with chronic kidney disease, and to provide information to utilize when speaking to your health care professional, including home dialysis if it is appropriate.
