Summer reading offers a cool way to relax and learn

July 11, 2019

Reading is a great way to pass the summer! Books offer adventure, mystery, humor, exotic places, interesting characters, and more. When the weather is hot, find a cool spot and curl up with a good book.

Reading during the summer is also shown to help students start strong in fall when they go back to class. Reading and learning during the summer keeps skills sharp and reduces summer slide, when students forget some of what they’ve learned. Students who read at least three or four books during their summer break have an easier time when school starts in fall. For students who struggle, summer is a great time to catch up or get ahead.

Need help finding good books? Visit the MPS Reads page to find lists of suggested books suitable for all ages.

Check out your local library for free summer fun. The Milwaukee Public Library system has many air conditioned branches across the city. Children, teens, and adults can sign up for reading programs to earn great prizes just by reading books. Visit www.mpl.org to learn more.
