Milwaukee agencies recognize June as Men’s Health Month

Brain Brawn & Body, a website dedicated to men’s health and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare held a joint press conference Monday, June 1, 2015, in commemoration of June being Men’s Health Month, at Journey House, 2110 W. Scott Street, to announce their free health summit to be held on June 20, 2015. Men’s Health Month has been observed nationally since 1994. In 2013, Milwaukee became one of a few cities in the nation to recognize the occasion, which came at the urging of Brain Brawn & Body founder Eric Von. Bringing awareness to men’s health, Von said: “The statistics around men’s health, are daunting, particularly for men of color. Many of the illnesses and diseases men suffer from are preventable and most are treatable if detected early.” This realization of men’s health issues being preventable, Von said. “We saw the absolute necessity to raise awareness among men about their responsibility to take control of their own health.” Public officials and community leaders attending the press conference (from left) are Ron Fancher of Milwaukee Area Technical College; Ella Dunbar of Social Development Commission; Eric Ford of Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare; Darryl Davidson of City of Milwaukee Health Department; Mayor Tom Barrett; Eric Von of Brain, Brawn & Body.com; Cherise Myers of Journey House; Ambrose Wilson-Brown of Journey House; State Representative David Bowen and Jim Addison of the Black Health Coalition of Wisconsin.
