Clara Jean Malone was born on September 9, 1934 to Lula Etta Gill in Meridan, Mississippi. She received her formal education at St. Joseph Catholic School in Meridan. Clara accepted Christ as her savior at an early age and united with Calvary Baptist Church. She later joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Racine, Wisconsin where she sang in the Gospel Chorus and choir.
