On Thursday, May 1, 2025, the Black Child Development Institute – Wisconsin (BCDIWI), held its 2005 gala – titled “Building Literacy, Empowering Futures,” as they celebrated the power of literacy to transform the lives of children across Wisconsin, at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center, 509 W. Wisconsin Ave. The nonprofit focuses on improving the quality of life of black children through direct support and policy-change advocacy. This year’s focus was on the power of literacy, which is more than just a skill—it is a crucial element that strengthens thriving communities and opens doors to endless possibilities and brighter futures for our children. This year BDCIWI had the support of Maya and Shaka Smart. Maya Smart, a Marquette University professor and literacy advocate, and author of “Reading for Our Lives: A Literacy Action Plan from Birth to Six,” dedicates her efforts to empowering caregivers and communities to nurture early literacy. Her husband Shaka Smart, Marquette University head basketball coach and community empowerment leader, stands with his wife Maya in advocating for equitable opportunities for children and families. The event was emceed by Fox 6 News anchor and reporter Derica Williams and hosted by BDCIWI board president Wanda Montgomery.
