America’s Black Holocaust’s Museum Honors the Memory of Founder, Dr. James Cameron

March 6, 2026

From Friday, February 20, to Saturday, February 21, 2026, America’s Black Holocaust Museum (ABHM) hosted a two-day Founders’ Day community weekend in memory of the late Dr. James Cameron, founder of the ABHM. Dr. Cameron, who passed on June 11, 2006, was one of a few documented survivors of a lynching and the Founders’ Day event served to honor his journey and his dedication to educating the public about resilience, reconciliation and healing. Hundreds of visitors from around the city, state and region viewed exhibits tracing the Black experience from the African continent to the transatlantic slave trade, through Reconstruction, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights Movement, to present day. Throughout the weekend guests enjoyed poetry from Milwaukee’s poet laureate, Shelly Conley; live music from Cigarette Break; for the young ones, arts and crafts with ABHM partner, The Milwaukee Public Museum; a book-club discussion, tours and other celebratory activities were offered. The two-day event was free and open to the public and was presented courtesy of The Brewers Community Foundation.
