The MILWAUKEE TIMES News has learned nine-year-old Za’layia Jenkins, who was shot near 15th and Meinecke on May 5th, has been “legally pronounced dead,” according to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police say the girl was struck by a stray bullet while inside her home on May 5th, during a shootout between two groups of armed individuals.

Police recovered more than 40 casings at the scene.

Za’layia Jenkins was listed in critical condition after the shooting.

Now, we have learned she was “legally pronounced dead/brain dead”  at 5:00 p.m. on May 16th, according to the medical examiner.

She remained on a ventilator Monday night, should the family choose to donate her organs, the medical examiner told FOX6 News.

The medical examiner said in a statement to FOX6 News that an autopsy is pending.

Jenkins would have turned 10 years old on Tuesday, May 17th.

No one has been taken into custody in connection with this shooting.

Investigators have asked the public for help locating a vehicle that was captured by surveillance cameras in the area at the time of the shooting.
