On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, Northcott Neighborhood House presented the “53rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration Parade and Festival” from N. 14th St. and W. Atkinson Ave. to N. MLK Dr. and W. Locust St. Milwaukee is home to one of the longest – held Juneteenth Day celebrations in the United States. June 19, 2024 marked the 53rd anniversary of the local event to commemorate Emancipation. When it first began in 1971, Milwaukee was one of the first northern cities to host such celebrations. The local parade and festivities have been organized by Northcott Neighborhood House for more than half century. This year’s festival included Opening Ceremonies emcee and TMJ4 News Anchor Shannon Sims; libations offered by WI Black Historical Society Executive Director Clayborn Benson; a welcome given by Northcott Board President Jalin Phelps; words by presenting sponsor Bader Philanthropies President/CEO Daniel J. Bader; and introduction of this year’s Juneteenth Court. The parade was led by this year’s Grand Marshall US Army Major General Johnny Davis; and a special swearing- in ceremony for newly appointed WI Circit Court Judge Lena Taylor by Chief Justice Carl Ashley. There were also information booths, vendors, food, music, entertainment and a children’s play area.
