On Tuesday, July 9, 2019, Milwaukee Public Schools, together with generous funders and community partners, announced a multi-million dollar investment in Milwaukee schools and neighborhoods. As part of an ongoing cycle, the district is beginning work that will reduce pavement and increase green space at four MPS schools, adding to several previous projects. Improvements will include bioswales to manage storm-water, outdoor classrooms, tree plantings, school gardens and plans to include ecology, sustainability and freshwater science into the curriculum.

The improvements will impact neighborhoods, provide community access and improve the quality of life in the city of Milwaukee. Mayor Tom Barrett, MPS Superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District Executive Director Kevin Shafer, along with MPS students took part in the groundbreaking at H.W. Longfellow School.
