Ensuring people with disabilities have fair access to voting

July 19, 2018

Staff Photos

The City of Milwaukee Election Commission, the Wisconsin Disability Vote Coalition, Independence First and the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County, People First Wisconsin and the Milwaukee Mental Health Task Force held a news conference on July 17, 2018 at the Independence First Center to celebrate National Voter Disability Voter Registration Week and highlight different resources available for voters in the upcoming August 14, 2018 Partisan Primary election and the November 6, 2018 General Election. The nonpartisan effort has the goal of increasing the electoral participation of people with disabilities. During the press conference a woman with impaired vision demonstrated an autoMark voting machine (lower photo), which uses technology to permit many persons with disabilities to mark their ballots in privacy. Pictured at the press conference are (top photo, from left) Disability Rights Wisconsin Milwaukee Office Director Barbara Beckert; and People First Wisconsin Executive Director Cindy Bentley.
