Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016) Poster

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (2016)

Certificate R 110 min   –   Drama | War

Metascore: 53/100 (21 reviews)
19-year-old Billy Lynn is brought home for a victory tour after a harrowing Iraq battle. Through flashbacks the film shows what really happened to his squad – contrasting the realities of war with America’s perceptions.
Director:

Ang Lee

Stars:

Joe Alwyn, Garrett Hedlund, Arturo Castro, Mason Lee

THE BUZZ: Remember all the drama about The Hobbit‘s frame rate and how the movie looked a bit hyper-real, like a telenovela? Well, the fact that Billy Lynn was shot in 120 frames-per-second (Peter Jackson shot in 48 f-p-s) has caused all sorts of headaches for Sony Pictures. Director Ang Lee and Sony boss Tom Rothman, who have worked together since Lee’s The Wedding Banquet, disagreed on the entire f-p-s issue, and since test screenings and initial festival plays have not fared well, Rothman decided to project the movie in standard 24 f-p-s — with a few exceptions — when Billy Lynn begins its theatrical rollout this weekend.

THE BUZZ: The appealing cast and holiday setting of Almost Christmas should help writer/director David E. Talbert (Baggage Claim/First Sunday) land his biggest hit yet.

THE BUZZ: “There are days that define your story beyond your life, like the day they arrived … ” That quote from the first four seconds of the trailer was all it took for me to sign up for this one. Although I am all in when it comes to cerebral sci-fi, first contact, and alien invasion movies, I’m especially excited for Arrival as it looks to be both thinky and contemplative, reminiscent of Contactbut combined with the looming threat of world destruction found in “Childhood’s End.” This invasion might not be as action-packed as Independence Day but the floating monoliths hovering over the open field in the Arrival evoke a quieter and more ominous threat. I can’t wait for this one. – Vanessa

Shut In (2016) Poster

Shut In (2016)

Certificate PG-13 91 min   –   Drama | Thriller

A heart-pounding thriller about a widowed child psychologist who lives in an isolated existence in rural New England. Caught in a deadly winter storm, she must find a way to rescue a young boy before he disappears forever.
Director:

Farren Blackburn

Stars:

Naomi Watts, Charlie Heaton, Jacob Tremblay, Oliver Platt

Watch Trailer Add to Watchlist Get Tickets

THE BUZZ: There’s a smothering pall hanging over Naomi Watts’ home in this thriller from veteran director Farren Blackburn. Her son, Charlie Heaton from “Stranger Things,” lives in a catatonic state after his father’s fatal car accident, an environment that seems fit for Jacob Tremblay from Room to come and lay his head after the death of his mother. Dr. Oliver Platt gets to watch Naomi’s complete mental breakdown and haunting via Skype, while we wonder exactly who will try and help set things right IRL.

Certificate R 130 min   –   Drama | Thriller

Metascore: 89/100 (20 reviews)

Director:

Paul Verhoeven

Stars:

Isabelle Huppert, Laurent Lafitte, Anne Consigny, Charles Berling

Watch Trailer Add to Watchlist

THE BUZZ: I get a welcome case of the icks when thinking about how Isabelle Huppert and Paul Verhoeven will approach a story that includes elements of Stockholm syndrome and industrial espionage. – Arno

The Love Witch (2016) Poster

The Love Witch (2016)

Certificate Unrated 120 min   –   Comedy | Horror

Metascore: 80/100 (13 reviews)
A modern-day witch uses spells and magic to get men to fall in love with her, in a tribute to 1960s pulp novels and Technicolor melodramas.
Director:

Anna Biller

Stars:

Samantha Robinson, Jeffrey Vincent Parise, Laura Waddell, Gian Keys

Watch Trailer Add to Watchlist

THE BUZZ: So dedicated to presenting her movie in a theatrical environment, director Anna Biller filmed her own PSA with her star Samantha Robinson telling people that using their phones during a movie is “anti-attractive,” which is one of many reasons to seek out a screening of Biller’s mash note to 1960s Technicolor magic.
