“There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.”
– Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
In a few weeks, most students will take a summer break from school. If you are thinking about how to keep your children and youth groups reading over the summer months, consider starting a Summer Reading Book Club for young people. Book Clubs are popular especially with women groups. Book Club members meet monthly or quarterly and books are chosen from suggestions by its members. If you are looking for ways to encourage your youth group to read over the summer, a Summer Reading Book Club for children and youth is a great idea! This week, I will offer 10 tips for starting a Summer Reading Book Club for your children and youth groups:
Tip #1: Select a team of organizers. This Team will plan the Summer Reading Book Club and also select books for summer reading for each age group targeted. Selecting books in advance will keep your Summer Book Club running smoothly. Be sure all books selected are age appropriate and are perfect for group discussion. Also, be sure the books are not too long and can be obtained from the library.
Tip #2: The team should also select the best time/ location for the Summer Reading Book Club to meet. Think about using a public location such as a library, community center, school or even your church.
Tip #3: Promote! Place an ad in the church bulletin that your children and youth group are starting a Summer Reading Book Club. Invite not only church members but reach out to young people in your community.
Tip #4: Encourage sign up! Invite interested parents to sign up their children and youth. Personally, encourage your youth group to attend. Even if youth say books aren’t their thing, when young people get together for fellowship, discussion and socialization, you will find young people will join in picking up a good book to read.
Tip #5: Invite community partners. Invite other churches and youth organizations in your community to participate.
Beloved, once a plan is in place and promotion begins, you are on your way! In next week’s conclusion, I will provide additional tips to starting a Summer Reading Book Club for your children and youth groups.
