Eugenia Hicks was the sixth of eight children born to the union of James and Mattie Rooters. She entered this world on June 12, 1923, in Pine Bluff, AR. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Prairie Lake Missionary Baptist Church in Wilkins, AR. Eugenia attended Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), where she earned her GED.
In 1940, she was married to the love of her life, James Hicks, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. After several years of living in the South, they migrated to Milwaukee, WI with their children, where she joined Tabernacle Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Jewel Williams. Later in life, she united with Sharon Seventh Day Adventist Church, where she served faithfully until she was unable to attend. She loved her position on the usher board and became a dedicated member of the Bible study class. Her joy was going to camp meetings with her younger children and grandchildren.
Eugenia worked for Milwaukee Public Schools as an educational assistant until she retired in 2003, after 35 years of service. She loved her family, and she was a dedicated mother to her children.
Eugenia (Rooters) Hicks departed this life on February 19, 2018 at 2:30 a.m. after a short illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mattie Rooters; her husband, James Hicks; four brothers, Albert Rooters, James Rooters, Fred Rooters and Henry Rooters; three sisters, Bertha Pridgeon, Willie Lowe and Gemella Howard; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
She leaves to cherish many memories her family, which includes seven children: Joyce Zollicoffer, Bobbie Lathan, Dorothy Laurence, James (Ann) Hicks, Jr. and Mattie Haywood, all of Milwaukee, WI; Larry Hicks and Ronnie (Rosalinda) Hicks of Las Vegas, NV; twentyone grandchildren, fifty-seven great grandchildren, seventy-two great-great grandchildren, two great-great-great grandchildren and her cherished pet, Scat-cat.
